Today, Minsk has put behind its dreary reputation and embarked on the journey of being a progressive, modern and clean city. The city has a lot of history rolled up its sleeve and you can find out all that there is to know about the Soviet and Lukashenko periods at the museums and culturally important sites. However, that is not to say that the city is boring. Come evenings and you can bask in the glory of every cosmopolitan delight one can think of. Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War

Opened to public in 1944, the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War was the first museum in the world to give a detailed account of the heinous atrocities inflicted on Belarus and the courage it showed in fighting off the Nazis. A commission was put in charge of collecting documents and materials about the Great Patriotic War. Given their efforts, the museum today has a vast collection of historical relics that articulate everything that surfaced during the Nazi occupation. The most disturbing section of the museum is however, on the concentration camps. Rent a car and drive straight to the museum to brush up your history about the events that unfurled during the Nazi rule.

National Library of Belarus

The National Library of Belarus was founded in 1922 under the name Belarusian State University Library and contained about 60,000 books at that time. However, if you look at the collection today, you’d be amazed beyond words. The library has a collection of about 10 million items that has just about everything you might want to read. However, the rare manuscripts and early printed books remain the prized possession of the library till date. The collection of the library is not the only attractive thing about it, the building in which it is housed is a sheer architectural wonder. An unusual design that embodies a mathematical system of coordinates with 8 triangular faces and 18 square faces. And as evening takes charge, the building illuminates in vibrant colors which is a sight to behold.

The central part of the city is known as Independence Square. However, until 1991 it was called the Lenin Square. In the past, the square served as a venue for ceremonial gatherings such as parades and military meetings. Today, visitors can stroll around and find typical Soviet style buildings dotting the area. The Lenin statue gracing the center of the square is quite intriguing. The square is a nice place to sit back and look at the city’s fine blend of the past and the present.
