Terms & Conditions for Pet Travel

Method of Transportation: Domesticated dogs, cats, rabbits and birds are allowed to travel with you in the cabin, on most flights within the U.S

Requirements for travelling in Passenger Cabin:

  1. In-cabin pets are allowed to be carried in addition to a carry-on baggage.
  2. During the flight, pets must be in an approved pet-carrier or kennel. This pet carrier can be soft-sided or hard-sided.
  3. The maximum permitted dimensions for pet-carrier--> 17.5 inches long x 12 inches wide x 7.5 inches high (44 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm) for hard-sided kennels and 18 inches long x 11 inches wide x 11 inches high (46 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm) for soft-sided kennels.
  4. The kennel needs to fit properly under the seat in front of you and remain there all through the flight.
  5. Only one pet per kennel is allowed. However, if you’re transporting birds, two of them may travel in the same kennel.
  6. The kennel must be big enough for the pet to stand up and turn around comfortably.
  7. Service animals are different than regular pets, so are the rules related to their travel.

Fee for Pet transport:

  1. Each pet is charged a service fee of $125 for each way.
  2. An additional service fee of $125 is charged for each stop-over of more than four hours within the U.S. and more than 24 hours outside of the U.S.
  3. Pets are not permitted to fly from, to or through Hawaii, Australia or Micronesia.

Method of Transportation: Spirit Airlines allows for pets to travel in the passenger cabin.

Requirements for traveling in Passenger Cabin:

  1. Only domesticated pets like dogs and cats are allowed.
  2. Only on domestic routes or to San Juan or to Puerto Rico allowed.
  3. Your pet can easily fit in the kennel, below the seat during the entire flight.
  4. The kennel is specially designed for animal carriage and its dimensions do not exceed 18in x 14in x 9in.
  5. Your pet is carrying all the required documents.
  6. The kennel must be escape-proof and leak proof.
  7. Must have proper ventilation, and any part of the animal must not protrude outside the container.
  8. Must have enough space for the animal to stand and turn around.
  9. Be made of wood, metal or a hard plastic composite.
  10. Must have absorbent material or litter.
  11. Must have functional handles on the exterior to prevent the kennel from tilting and any direct contact with the pets.
  12. Must not be locked, but securely closed.
  13. Must be properly labeled with "Live Animal."
  14. Must be properly labeled with arrows indicating the correct position of the kennel.

Fees for Pet Transport:

  1. For Kennel Rental - $50 one way
  2. For Passenger Cabin - $100 for each container, one way

Health Documentation Required: While Spirit Airlines do not ask for any health documents for your pet, there are some states and countries that may ask for the documents. It is a passenger’s responsibility to be aware of any such regulation. You may approach your veterinarian and the Department of Agriculture to make sure that your pet complies with all the requirements.

Other Restrictions: Spirit Airlines may disallow your pet in case of any illness, violent behavior, poor kenneling or extreme temperatures at the destination, origin or transfer airports.

Methods of Transport for Pets: Pets are allowed to travel in the passenger cabin and are checked as baggage

Requirements for traveling in Passenger Cabin:

  1. Domesticated dogs, cats, rabbits, and birds are only allowed
  2. Traveling with pets not allowed to/from Maui or Honolulu
  3. Your pet can restfully remain in its kennel, under the seat for the entire flight
  4. The kennel made for pet carriage should not exceed 16 in x 17.5 in x 8.5 in, in its sizes and it
  5. should not weigh more than 22lbs (including pet)
  6. Pets must be over eight weeks old
  7. Pet must have all essential health documents required by your destinations

Condition specific for Pets to be checked as baggage:

  1. Domesticated dogs, cats, birds, hedgehogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas are only allowed
  2. Pet traveling should comfortably remain in its kennel for the entire flight.
  3. The carriage of the pet should not exceed 36in X 24in X 26in, in its dimensions or 100 lbs.
  4. The container should have labels with words "Live Animal" in letters at least 1-inch tall on the crate’s top, at least on one side.
  5. Should have upright arrow mark indicating carriage correct position.
  6. Pet must have all essential health documents required by your destination.
  7. Travel with pets not allowed to Palm Springs, Honolulu, Maui, Phoenix at any time of the year
  8. Not allowed to travel to Tampa, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale between May 1st to September 30th

Fees for Pet Transport:

  1. Fee for pet in the passenger cabin: Can be titled as your carry-on-item
  2. Fee for pet checked as baggage: Regular baggage fees only applies. You can also refer to Excess Baggage Fees.

Health Documentation Required: WestJet Airlines doesn’t require a health certificate for a pet but some states and countries do require health documents. It should be passenger’s responsibility to be aware of all guidelines. You should consult your veterinarian and the DA (Department of Agriculture) to confirm that your pet will fulfill with all requirements.

Other Restrictions: WestJet Airlines does not allow to travel a pet owing to illness, hostile behavior, poor kenneling, or extreme temperatures at origin or transfer.

Requirements for traveling in Passenger Cabin: Frontier Airlines do not permit pets to be checked as baggage

Pets Carriage Requirements:

  1. Entire pets traveling in the cabin must be held in a kennel that meets the below-mentioned size requirements:

Health Documentation Required: Entire pets must have a health certificate issued within 10 days of departure from the originating city is required. Rabies-free certificate for dogs is also very essential. Some states and countries also require additional health certificates. It should be passenger’s responsibility to be aware of all guidelines, you should consult your veterinarian and the DA (Department of Agriculture) to confirm that your pet will fulfill with all requirements

Methods of Transport for Pets: Allowed to travel in the passenger cabin and are checked as baggage

Requirements for traveling in Passenger Cabin:

  1. Only a pet per ticketed passenger is allowed
  2. 16lbs or lesser weighted pets are allowed but within USA. The flight doesn’t allow international travel for pets.
  3. Your pet in its kennel will be considered as a carry-on item and therefore should be included in your carry-on allotment
  4. Only one pet per kennel is allowed
  5. Carrier for pet shouldn’t exceed 16 in x 11 in x 8 in (length x width x height).
  6. The kennel should have enough room for the pet to stand and turn around
  7. Your pet should restfully remain in its kennel, under the seat for the entire flight
  8. Soft-sided carriers designed as pet carriers are only allowed.

Pets Carriage Requirements:

  1. Kennel should be escape -proof and leak-proof.
  2. The pet carriage should be properly ventilated, but should not allow any part of pet from protruding outside of the kennel;
  3. The kennel should have enough room for the pet to stand and turn around;
  4. Carriage should be closed securely, but not locked
  5. The container should have labels with words "Live Animal" in letters at least 1-inch tall on the crate’s top, at least on one side.
  6. Should have upright arrow mark indicating carriage correct position.

Condition specific for Pets to be checked as Baggage:

  1. A restricted reservation must be made for each segment. It must be booked with Sun Country Reservations and cannot be made at the airport or online.
  2. Pets are allowed on all domestic flights except Anchorage, Branson, Laughlin, Miami, New York, San Juan, and St. Thomas. Pets are not allowed on International flights.
  3. Pets are also not allowed on multi-stop or connecting flights.
  4. Passenger must travel on the same flight.
  5. Pet and kennel cannot exceed a combined weight of one hundred (100) lbs.
  6. Pets are subject to TSA screening
  7. Pets may not be checked in more than four (4) hours prior to scheduled departure.
  8. Dogs and cats must be at least eight weeks old and weaned for at least five (5) days.
  9. No more than 2 puppies or kittens younger than 6 months, under 20 pounds, and of the same species may be transported in the same carriage.
  10. Maximum of four (4) pets as carry-on baggage and two (2) pets as checked baggage will be allowed per flight total.

Fees for Pet Transport:

  1. Fee for pet in the passenger cabin: $199 per kennel per flight segment
  2. Fee for animal checked as baggage: $100 per flight segment
  3. Payment will only be accepted at the airport on the day of departure. No pre-paid fees are allowed
  4. Refunds are not allowed unless Sun Country Airlines refuses transportation of animal

Health Documentation Required:

Sun Country Airlines requires a legal health certificate for each pet transported as checked baggage. Certificate must be issued within thirty (30) days of departure and contain the following:

  1. Passenger's Name and Address
  2. Name and breed of Pet
  3. Signed and dated by a veterinarian, stating the animal is in good health

A list of administered inoculations and any medication required.

Other Restrictions

  1. Sun Country Airlines does not allow to travel a pet owing to illness, hostile behavior, poor kenneling, or extreme temperatures at origin or transfer.
  2. Pets transported in the baggage compartment cannot be in heat, tranquilized, or have symbols of a pre-existing condition, illness, or indication of recent surgery.
  3. Pets will not be accepted at curbside check-in, only at the main Sun Country ticketing counter.

Methods of Transport for Pets: Your pet may be carried with you in the cabin as well as can be counted as a cargo

Pets Traveling in the Cabin:

  1. Passenger accompanying the pet must be 18 yrs or older.
  2. The First Class cabin can accommodate a total of one pet carrier per flight.
  3. The main cabin can accommodate a total of up to five pet carriers per flight.
  4. While traveling with a pet, passengers may not occupy an emergency exit row seat.
  5. Dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old and must have been fully weaned.
  6. The pet must stay in its container (including head and tail) at all times while on board, and be put under the seat during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

Pets in the Baggage and Cargo Compartments:

  1. Pets that may travel in the climate-controlled baggage and cargo compartments include cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits, and tropical fish.
  2. Dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks of age and weaned.
  3. Animals must be harmless, inoffensive (not destructive to itself or the kennel), and require no attention during transit.

Checked Kennels Must:

  1. Be secured with nut- and bolt-type fasteners if the kennel is not constructed as one piece.
  2. Be of solid construction and composed of plastic, wood, metal or material of comparable strength and able to withstand rigors of normal transportation.
  3. Be escape-proof with one metal grated door fastened securely to prevent accidental opening.
  4. Have handles or handholds on the exterior to lift without tipping.
  5. Contain a food and water dish clipped inside the door to allow feeding without opening the door.
  6. Be clean and leak-proof with absorbent bedding made of material that is safe and non-toxic to the animal.
  7. Have adequate air ventilation. Vents must be covered with permanent bars or other sturdy material.
  8. Sedating your pets are not allowed as it may be dangerous to tranquilize an animal at high altitudes.

Breed Restrictions:

  1. The animals allowed to be transported are dogs, cats, rabbits and household birds.
  2. Short-nosed animals have genetic predispositions which cause breathing problems. These health problems may get worse while flying at a high altitude. Hence, short-nosed cats and dogs are not allowed to be transported in the cargo compartment of Alaska Airlines flights including the ones operated by Horizon, SkyWest, Ravn Alaska and PenAir. However, short-nosed animals are still allowed to travel in the cabin with their owners/guardians as long as they remain in their pet carrier.
  3. The pet carrier needs to be small enough to fit under the seat of the passenger sitting ahead of you.
  4. The short-nosed rule applies to the following breeds-

    Cats- Burmese, Exotic shorthair, Himalayan, Persian.

    Dogs- Boston terrier, Boxer (all breeds), Bull Dog (all breeds), Bull Terrier, Brussels Griffon, Chow Chow, English Toy Spaniel, Japanese Spaniel/Japanese Chin, Mastiff (all breeds), Pekingese, Pit Bull (all breeds), Pug (all breeds), Shih Tzu, Staffordshire Terrier.

Restrictions for Pet Travel:

  1. Northeastern U.S. experiences extreme heat waves. Hence, for a certain period of time in a year, pets are not allowed to travel in the baggage or cargo compartments of the flights flying to/from Newark, New York-Kennedy, Washington-Reagan, Washington-Dulles, Baltimore, or Philadelphia airports.
  2. Pet will be accepted in the cabin during this time frame.
  3. Only cats and dogs are accepted on flights flying to Hawaii. But additional requirements (rabies-free document) must be met while flying to Hawaii.
  4. If you’re flying with connecting-flights of other airlines, you need to contact that particular airline directly to book a space for your pet and get all the necessary info about pet travel that’s specific to that airline.
  5. While traveling on connecting flights, the pets need to be claimed and rechecked to the connecting airline as Alaska Airlines does not transfer the pets traveling in the baggage compartment to other airlines.

Travel Fee:

  1. In Cabin- $100.00 USD each day.
  2. In Baggage- $100.00 USD each day.

Health Documentation Requirements:

  1. The pets needs to be in good health for them to be able to fly.
  2. If a pet is in distress due to an injury or illness, entry to the flight will be denied.
  3. If the kennel is not big enough for the pet to comfortably stand up and turn around, the pet will not be allowed to fly.
  4. Health certificate from a veterinarian is necessary stating that your beloved pet is healthy enough to fly and that all the required vaccinations are up-to-date.

Requirements for traveling in Passenger Cabin:

AA allows up to 7 pets in the Passenger Cabin meeting the following requirements-

  1. Traveling within the 48 contiguous United States, Alaska, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Croix, or from the U.S. to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean provided the country of arrival permits entry.
  2. Carry-on pets are NOT ALLOWED on flights to or from Hawaii, Central America, South America or on Transatlantic or Transpacific journeys.
  3. Only domesticated cats and dogs are allowed.
  4. Cats and dogs must be at least 8 weeks old.
  5. Itinerary does not include travel to/from Hawaii or Transatlantic/Transpacific or Central and South America.
  6. Pets must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in the kennel and can comfortably remain in its kennel, under the seat for the entire flight.
  7. The kennel must not exceed 19in x 13in x 9in (length x width x height).
  8. Pets traveling in the cabin require a reservation.

Requirements for traveling as Checked Baggage:

  1. Itinerary does not include travel to the United Kingdom.
  2. Pet can comfortably remain in its kennel for the entire flight.
  3. Must have a water container with outside access for filling, as well as a small bag of food for a 24-hour period.
  4. Checked pets cannot be accepted when the ground temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any location on the itinerary.
  5. Does not exceed 40in x 27in x 30in, and weight of animal and kennel combined does not exceed 100 lb.
  6. Flight longer than 12 hours.
  7. Series 700 kennels are not allowed.
  8. Series 500 kennels are not allowed on Boeing MD-80 aircraft.
  9. Checked pets do not require a reservation.

  2. Fee for animal checked as baggage to/from United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean: $175 one way

Health Documentation Required: While American Airlines does not require a health certificate for your animal to travel domestically, some States do require health documents. You may consult your veterinarian and the Department of Agriculture for the same.

Health Documentation Required:

Method of Transportation: Only small cats and dogs allowed in carriers that can fit below the seat of the passengers.

Kennel Requirements:

Method of Transportation: Cats and dogs travel in the main cabin of the aircraft.
