Thanksgiving Day

In 1863, the former American President Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving. Since then, the fourth Thursday of every November has been designated as Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving Day is an occasion of expressing gratitude, of family get-togethers and holiday feasts. A time for gorging on turkey, pumpkin pie, gravy, corn, potatoes and stuffing. A time for a grand celebration that includes a parade featuring ginormous floats, giant balloons, pulsating music and dance. People celebrate Thanksgiving Day by offering thanks to the almighty for what they have. Many people also present gifts to their friends and family like flowers, chocolates, baked cookies, jewelry, etc.

Many cities and towns organize Thanksgiving Day parades. Some of the parades announce the opening of the Christmas Shopping Season. Many people also head out for a short getaway, thanks to a four-day weekend.

Public Life

Most of the government offices, corporates, schools and other organizations remain close on Thanksgiving Day. Many corporate houses grant their employees a four-day weekend and thus, offices remain closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day as well. The local transport systems may also not operate as per their usual schedules.
