Observed on the last Monday of in the month of May, Memorial Day was formerly called Decoration Day and honors all the men and women, who have sacrificed their lives during military service for the United States. A lot of people visit cemeteries and memorials on this day and it is conventionally seen as the beginning of the summer season.
It is a tradition to fly the flag of the United States of America at half staff from dawn till noon. Number of people go to cemeteries and memorials, especially to recognize and honor the greats who passed away during military service. Memorial Day is classified as a federal holiday. All the non-significant Government offices, schools, businesses and other organizations are closed. Most of the public transit systems do not ride on their normal schedule.
