Observed on the last Monday of in the month of May, Memorial Day was formerly called Decoration Day and honors all the men and women, who have sacrificed their lives during military service for the United States. A lot of people visit cemeteries and memorials on this day and it is conventionally seen as the beginning of the summer season.
It is a tradition to fly the flag of the United States of America at half staff from dawn till noon. Number of people go to cemeteries and memorials, especially to recognize and honor the greats who passed away during military service. Many people volunteer and place an American flag on each of the graves in the national cemeteries. Coincidently, Jefferson Davis' Birthday in Mississippi is combined with this day.
Memorial Day is classified as a federal holiday. All the non-significant Government offices, schools, businesses and other organizations are closed. Most of the public transit systems do not ride on their normal schedule.
There are a number of people who see the Memorial Day weekend as great opportunity to take a short vacation or visit their family and friends which often leads to some congestion on highways and at the airports.
